Education & Health

The future of the vulnerable children can only be assured through access to basic education and health. MercyLine is addressing these through provision of tuition/fees and scholastic materials (pens, exercise books, math sets, school uniforms) to children mainly in primary schools.

Because MercyLine does not operate a hospital or medical clinic, we refer the sick children to a MercyLine-approved clinic where the organizations pays for the medical services at a later date. In a bid to improve the sleeping conditions, bed nets and blankets are provided to the children.

Although the government through the Universal Primary Education (UPE) program has enabled many children, government schools are not in every area therefore some of the children are forced to attend private schools which charge tuition/fees and other school dues. LICHI is expected to help some of these children who cannot afford.
We have worked with the leadership of different schools to establish health clubs in the schools to see the following: how extra co-curricular activities i.e. games and sports are revived in schools.

Counselling & Social Followups

MercyLine carries out individual, family and institutional based counseling services to abused children as well as the HIV \ AIDS affected and infected children.

Social Followups

This involves finding caregivers of the abused children and arranging for appropriate counseling and referrals if necessary.

During the follow ups, Mercy Line social workers identify children with specific needs. We then go on to help them via the appropriate procedure. For example if we identify child laborers usually working as domestic servants, we reclaim them and enroll them back in school.

Education & Training

We help Children access education by providing for the needs they have to be able to go to School. The Ugandan extended family system, like many other developing countries, has been the core support provider for orphans, but AIDS, combined with other social and economic pressures has pushed the extended family system to breaking point especially in the worst affected communities here in Uganda. As a result, the Streets of our Towns and Cities are getting big numbers of orphaned Children who do not have anyone to look after them come to live a life of a beggar on the Streets!

FIRST - first of all we tend to look into the nutritional, medical and educational needs of the child, as required. At the same time, work with the family, teaching parents or guardians skills that can raise their incomes and help them become self-sufficient. And we do this according to the need throughout an entire area or village. As the child's basic needs are tended to, he or she will find hope in family and in the surrounding environment. And as a result, the child will begin to hear a voice swell within him - the voice of self-esteem. It tells him something he may never have heard or felt before - that somewhere he matters just enough to have his spirit revived, his hunger satisfied, his mind challenged. We encourage all wel-wishers and good Samaritan to partner with us in raising school fees for these little angels. Please see our child sponsorship program for sponsorship.

School Outreach

Through this ministry, School Outreach has impacted many secondary schools in and around Jinja and Kampala plus those found upcountry. It has of late begun reaching out to tertiary institutions including Universities like Namasagali University, Jinja School of Nursing Institutes, International School of Health Science and Busoga University.

Many students have turned to Christ during these meetings with some quitting drugs and others being set free from sexual immorality. Strong bible fellowships, which have transformed the students' lives, have been set up in these schools. And as a result, the neighboring communities have also been blessed.

Mothers & Widows Empowerment Program

The husband is the traditional breadwinner in the Ugandan family, and if something happens to him, his family is left to suffer. The women's empowerment scheme seeks to teach mothers and widows practical skills, so that they can support their family and keep their family in school. The women are taught to raise and sell pigs for profit, and volunteers are expected to have knowledge of caring for animals and a willingness to build pig pens.

MercyLine developed also the Hope Handcraft Group to teach the women to make handcrafts as a source of income and empowerment. The women gather weekly to share skills and work on their crafts. The jewelry is made from local materials including seeds, paper and bone, in a painstaking process to create beads of uniform color and design. They are varnished, dried and strung together in unique patterns to create necklaces and earrings. Bags, jewelry boxes and bowls are some of the other items made. Ideally we need volunteers to help in developing a market for these products. A local market is the aim in order to make it a profitable venture. If volunteers could find a gap in the international market this would also be greatly appreciated. You can donate to support this group of people to start their income generating activities.
